The AJET Peer Support Group, PSG for short, is a confidential and anonymous service operated for JETs by JETs. It operates every day from 8pm until 7am on the number 050-5534-5566.
Confidential and Anonymous?
Confidential? - What you say to the PSG volunteers stays in PSG. We do keep abstract data like the types of problems people commonly call about, but no identifying information is kept, except in the case of suicidal calls where the caller is strongly encouraged to find outside help immediately. PSG is affiliated with National AJET, but is under no obligation to report to anyone so we can guarantee complete confidentiality.
Anonymous? – You choose how much you want to say. If you want to remain completely anonymous then you’re free to do so. Likewise PSGs volunteers are anonymous, so even if the person is in your prefecture you don’t have to worry about them recognising you or you recognising them.
For JETs by JETs?
PSG recruits and trains its own volunteers. These PSG volunteers are all recontracting members of the JET Programme, drawn from all over Japan and from a range of nationalities. JETs receive no payment or reward beyond knowing that they’re helping the JET community, and a certificate of thanks at the end of the year.
How does it work?
Any time from 8pm to 7am you can dial the PSG line on 050-5534-5566 speak to a volunteer about whatever is bothering you.
Didn’t the number used to be different?
Yes. PSG has just changed telephone number from 0120-437-725 to 050-5534-5566. Please spread the word! But don’t worry, calls to the old number will hear a message informing them of the new number. This is in place until June 2010.
Anything else?
We have just started a wiki at www.ajet.net/psg to act as an easy reference guide for JETs on lots of common problems. If you think you can help us develop it by contributing any resources that you think JETs in your prefecture (or JETs visiting your prefecture) might need, such as hospital details, emergency contact information, and so on, please feel free to email them to the PSG National Coordinator at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
